POLICE have said they will impound unroadworthy vehicles and take them off the road during the Easter holidays as part of measures to reduce accidents.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said police would be out in full force, checking for stolen cars, criminals, cattle rustlers and drug traffickers.

She urged motorists to exercise caution especially during the Easter holidays. She warned motorists to observe the road rules and regulations and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged motorists to cooperate with police officers when stopped at roadblocks.

“We have deployed police officers on the country’s roads and we urge motorists and public transporters to cooperate with the police when stopped at roadblocks to avoid inconveniences,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the police will be working with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) and Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) to make sure that the Easter holidays are accident free.

TSCZ, Board Chairman, Nelson Mawema said the travelling public should assist police on the country’s roads by reporting speeding, overloaded and defective vehicles. He said unroadworthy vehicles and unlicensed drivers should not be allowed to ferry people.

“The public should not cry foul or force the police to let go an unroadworthy vehicle. If a motorist, private or public is arrested passengers should look for other means of transport to arrive safely,” said Mawema.

Statistics have proved that more than 90 percent of road accidents are caused by human error ranging from reckless driving, drunken driving and speeding.

Last year 30 people were killed and 229 injured in road accidents during the Easter and Independence holidays.
