Policy deferred

Business Reporter
RESERVE Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr Gideon Gono has postponed announcing the mid-term monetary policy to next month after the harmonised elections.Dr Gono was expected to deliver the monetary policy statement earlier this month but deferred it until after the national elections taking place today.

In a statement yesterday, the central bank chief said he would issue the monetary policy statement after the national elections but on a date to be advised next month.

“The next six months will to a very large extent depend on the outcome of the harmonised elections,” Dr Gono said. “Against this background, and with concurrence of the (finance) minister, I hereby advise the market that a post-election Monetary Policy Statement will be issued on a date to be advised in August, 2013.”

The policy statement comes at a time when the economy has not been growing due to the adoption of a wait-and-see attitude by stakeholders.
