The Agricultural Marketing Authority yesterday said more than 105 million kilogrammes of cotton have been sold so far since the opening of the selling season in May.Latest statistics show that by July 19, 105 764 875 kg of cotton had been bought by merchants. According to the statistics, buyers are offering between US45 cents and US58 cents per kg. Other companies are offering transport to the collection depots to lure farmers to sell their crop while others offering a back pay.
Some merchants are crying foul over side marketing which they say would threaten the industry. Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union second vice president Mr Johnson Mapira said side marketing was rampant in most areas as farmers sought the buyer offering the highest price. “Farmers are side marketing their crop.
We do not encourage such practices but we advise buyers to offer competitive prices so that they will be able to retain the crop they supported,” he said.
