Polls only way to end GPA row

Province Cde Amos Midzi has said.
At the same time, the party’s natio-nal political commissar, Cde Webster Shamu, has urged churches to teach their members how to make full use of such gains of the liberation struggle as the indigenisation programme.

The two leaders said this at separate meetings in Harare yesterday.
Addressing hundreds of Zanu-PF youths at a rally in Mbare, Cde Midzi said the party would stand by the resolutions made at the people’s annual conference in Mutare last year that elections should go ahead this year with or without the MDC formations.

The youths were drawn from all the districts in Harare.
Cde Midzi said the party was geared for the polls and would win resoundingly.

“We want to solve the problems whi-ch have bedevilled the country during the time of this useless marriage and we are saying let’s go for elections now without further delay.
“We are behind President Mugabe on this issue as this is now time for separation. As a party we are prepared to have elections this year and Zimbabwe cannot be held to ransom by one political party.
“We are confident of victory as most people have realised they blundered by voting MDC in 2008. Now it is time to vote for a party with a history, which is Zanu-PF,” he said.

He challenged youths to get registered.
Meanwhile, Zanu-PF national political commissar, Cde Webster Shamu, has urged the church to denounce neo-colonialism and uphold the aspirations of those who fought for the liberation of the country.
Cde Shamu, who is also the Minister of Media, Information and Publicity, said this while addressing hundreds of Johanne Masowe weChishanu members in Highfield yesterday.

Cde Shamu was accompanied by his wife, Constance, Zanu-PF Harare chairman Cde Midzi and Harare political commissar Cde Onismo Gore.
He said Zanu-PF appreciated Christians’ contributions to the development of the country since the liberation stru-ggle.

Cde Shamu noted that Johanne Ma-sowe weChishanu was one of those churches which were not tolerated by the colonisers.
“Your ideology of supporting blacks resulted in you being blacklisted by the settler regime. They wanted you to fo-llow their churches so that they would have dominance over you in all sectors but you remained resolute. You saw the dangers of imperialism and fought those who wanted to see themselves as a superior race,” he said.

He lauded Christians’ role in maintaining peace in Zimbabwe and urged people to humble themselves before God.
Christians, Cde Shamu said, played a pivotal role in maintaining the coun-try’s moral fabric.
“Continue displaying such an exemplary behaviour to the nation. As a party we will continue working with you in improving the welfare of the people.

“You are a principled sector and to-gether we must show the world that we are our own liberators,” he said.
He said churches should also benefit from the Government’s indigenisation programme.

Cde Shamu, however, said the illegal sanctions imposed on the country by the West were making it difficult for companies to recapitalise.
“We have a good empowerment dri-ve on the cards and it’s for everyone including the church. We want chur-ches to have their businesses and shun donor dependence. Let’s get shares from companies as well as establishing new ones.

“It is of course painful that sanctions are making it difficult for us to achieve our needs and thus collective efforts are needed to fight them,” he said.
Leader of the Highfield sect Madzibaba David Chikobvu said the country’s destiny lay in the hands of blacks.

“The history of the church has it that we don’t follow what the whites want. We are blacks and likewise we must be led by a black person,” he said.
He said the churches and Government should continue working toge-ther for the development of the na- tion.
