Harare City Council, with the help of other organisations, on Monday managed to douse the fire which broke out on Sunday at Pomona dump site. The fire which is suspected to have started at around 4am spread across the dump site and by Monday, a thick cloud of smoke still hung around the area.
Motorists had problems moving around the area as smoke affected visibility.
Director for Waste Management, Mr Dombo Chibanda said the fire was suspected to have been started by a vagrant who was preparing a meal.
“The fire did not start outside the dumping site. It was started within the dump site and the windy conditions led to the quick spreading of the fire within the dump site and burnt the refuse and grass,” he said.
He said the city council started fighting the fire around 8am and had to recall some of its vehicles that were working elsewhere.
“We recalled five tipper trucks and a front loader. The front loader was loading soil in the trucks which was being used to put out the fire at the refuse disposal site,” he said.
Mr Chibanda said the council’s bowsers were also recalled to help in fighting the fire while the fire brigade brought two fire engines.
“We also got help from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe which sent us water carriers which we used as a source of water while the hose was used to put out the fire.”
