Population policies in Africa debated

The Herald, April 11, 1983

DELEGATES from East and Southern Africa are in Zimbabwe this week to attend a week-long seminar on population and development.

The seminar, for parliamentarians from the region, was opened by the President of the Senate, Cde Nolan Makombe, on Saturday in Harare. The delegates then moved to Juliasdale hotel where the seminar will continue from today.

The administrator of the Zimbabwe Child Spacing and Fertility Association, Cde Moffat Makuto, said the seminar would study the population situation in the context of Africa.

“In Africa, where millions of people live close to the poverty datum line, the determination of policies on the population to ensure that maximum development and welfare for the people is crucial and urgent,” he said.

The seminar also aimed to help individual countries plan population growth in relation to economic growth and it was hoped that the representatives would influence the population development policies in their respective countries.

Of the 100 delegates expected to attend, 30 are from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius, Zambia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Others are from Zimbabwe.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

The population of a country has a direct impact on its development. The two issues are intertwined.

Determining the population of a country from time to time is very necessary to allow for proper planning by politicians and business people.

It is therefore very important that citizens participate fully in censuses like the one that will be carried out in the country from April 21 to 30, 2022.
