TUSKERS had a positive start in their 2022/23 Logan Cup encounter against Rhinos after the second day ended with the home side trailing by 189 runs at Kwekwe Sports Club yesterday.
With a first innings score of 295 all out courtesy of Milton Shumba’s 121 runs not out, Tuskers bowlers came to the party, taking five wickets at the end of the second day to give their side an edge with two days to go as Rhinos ended on 105-5 at stumps.
Alvin Chiradza also chipped in with the bat after Shumba’s maiden ton of the season with 55 runs for the Bulawayo based side while opening batsman Tanunurwa Makoni fell five runs short of his half century on 45 runs.
With the ball, Prince Kaunda and Hamidullah Qadri took two wickets each for Tuskers, conceding 31 and 17 runs in 11 and 13 overs respectively. The other wicket that fell was taken by Charlton Tshuma.
Takudzwanaishe Kaitano’s 30 runs for Rhinos was the highest score at the end of the second day followed by Antum Naqvi’s 21 runs. Prince Masvaure chipped in with 20 runs for the home side who have to dig deep if they are to secure a lead going into the second innings.
In the other match between Mega Market Mountaineers and Eagles at Old Hararians, the former ended day two on 293-3 after only 1.5 overs were played on day one. Ben Compton scored 105 runs off 151 deliveries while fellow opener Joylord Gumbie finished with 89 runs from the same number of balls as his opening partner. At stumps, Kevin Kasuza and Tony Munyonga were in the middle for Mountaineers on 31 and 40 runs respectively.
