Harare Central Constituency under the governance of MP Hon Lovemore Jimu, launched a poultry empowerment project that delivered 1,000 chicks to each of ten women’s groups made up of widows, single mothers, and vulnerable women.

The initiative is designed to transform lives by turning backyard poultry into a pathway toward Zimbabwe’s vision of an upper‑middle‑income society.

Unlike short‑term aid, this project emphasises sustainability from vulnerability to viability.

Hon Jimu said empowering vulnerable women is central to building resilient communities.

“This poultry project is not just about chicks; it is about giving women the tools to stand on their own feet.

“When a widow or single mother gains financial independence, the entire household benefits and the community grows stronger,”he said.

He emphasised that the initiative shifts women from dependency to entrepreneurship.

“We are dismantling barriers to financial independence by equipping women with productive assets.

“This is how we move from welfare to empowerment, ensuring no one is left behind in the march toward Vision 2030 of our country to attain an upper-middle-income society,”said Hon Jimu.

She highlighted the ripple effect of empowering women on food security and child welfare.

“A woman who can feed her family through poultry farming is a woman who can send her children to school.

“This project is about dignity, ownership, and creating lasting opportunities for vulnerable groups,”he said.

He said that the poultry project is a model for grassroots economic transformation.

“Small backyard projects can scale into thriving businesses that uplift entire wards,”he said.

“This is how local leadership drives meaningful change, one group at a time.”
