adminThe Almost Famous hit-maker, who last year bagged the Zim Hip-Hop People’s Choice Award at 7 Arts theatre in Harare, released his album titled Mabomba last Friday.
In an interview with Chronicle Entertainment, P.O.Y said that the release of his album on Friday the 13th was an artistic choice as it depicts his other side that nobody but himself knows.
The eloquent rapper also highlighted that he had put so much work into the album and he is very grateful to everyone who appreciates his work which he believed is always to the best of his ability.
“First things first, I would like to thank everyone whose nominations saw me scooping the Zim Hip-Hop People’s Choice Award last year. I believe I have managed to release the album through perseverance, the love I get from my fans and unwavering support from my sponsor Francis Maponga,” he said.
P.O.Y also said, most people thought hip-hop was just a waste of time, where people got to diss other rappers, but for him it is a serious genre that gives him the platform to articulate himself through the microphone.
“Most people think hip-hop is all about rappers messing around, ‘dissing’ each other and all, but for me it’s something I take seriously because everytime I’m on the mic, I know I’m on it and I get to express myself well.
“People should look forward to hot tracks such as Champagne, whose inspiration I got from the top-billing club, Horizon Pub and Restaurant. There is also Mabomba (which translates to explosive) and Rotten, which is my first unofficial single and is all about the things happening on the streets of Bulawayo from illegal deals and the things some girls are doing in these streets,” said the rapper.
The track Rotten has a ragga influence where there is chant of Jah! at the end of the track. P.O.Y said he made a number of changes on this particular album.
“The tracks on this album are different, so is the cover image done by graphic designer Simba Mayengera.
“The songs are a take not only on what is happening around me, but also to my alter ego. This album shows that up-and-coming artistes do not have to be based in Harare to make it,” said P.O.Y.
The lyrical rapper who free-styled at the Spoken Word and Hip-Hop festival held in Harare last November said unlike most selfish rappers who want to make it on their own, he had managed to collaborate with the likes
of MC Cheeter from Harare and Shy Star from Gwanda on the song Zim Takatora.
“I did some collaborations with MC Cheeter from Harare and Shy Star from Gwanda in Zim Takatora and this is clear indication that as artistes, we need to work together to promote our music,” he said.
The rapper, who has a clothing endorsement to his name, also encouraged up-and-coming artistes to get registered so that they get paid their royalties in full.
“Thanks to Mr Maponga, I am now enlightened on the other side of business which has enabled me to be business-minded and get everything I deserve. I am registered and this is a wake-up call to all up-and-coming artistes who want to make it in show-biz to go legit,” said the rapper. The album was recorded at a number of studios that include the House of Rising Sound, by veteran producer Joe Maseko, Mike and Mike Productions, Polite Pongo and Savannah Records.
