ONE of the country’s largest cement manufacturing companies PPC Zimbabwe Ltd has donated an ambulance to Mtshabezi Mission Hospital in Gwanda as part of their corporate social responsibility.
The donation of the ambulance comes as a relief to the hospital which had no ambulance after the one they were using broke down. Speaking at the handover ceremony at Mtshabezi Mission Hospital on Thursday, PPC Zimbabwe Collen Bawn General Manager, Mr Allan Tshabangu, said the donation was a token of appreciation and a cementing of relations between the company and the community.
“On behalf of PPC Zimbabwe Ltd we present to you this ambulance as our token of appreciation for the marvellous stakeholder relationship that we enjoy. We rejoice in giving back to the communities for these are the very same communities that give us business. PPC Zimbabwe is today a marvel, a giant in the cement industry and an employer of choice and it’s because of the communities we live in,” he added.
With PPC Zimbabwe’s strength coming from Collen Bawn factory the management expressed their excitement as they donated once again to the Matebeleland South community. Presenting the ambulance to Bishop Sindah Ngulube, Mr Tshabangu said their relationship with the community does not end with their corporate social initiatives they undertake as a business
“Our relationship is the one that extends to a lot other activities and engagement for example the refurbishing of the Inkonyane Children’s ward at Gwanda Provincial hospital which to date is one of the best in the country.”
He challenged the hospital staff to take good care of the ambulance and use it for the right operations beneficial to the communities around.
“I pray that this ambulance goes a long way in improving the operations of this hospital as you continue in this noble duty of taking care of our communities. Take good care of the ambulance too,” Mr Tshabangu said.
He added that the cement manufacturing giant was inspired by Anita Roddrick’s quote: “The business of business should not be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about private good, not private deed,” he said.
PPC Zimbabwe Ltd has had their corporate social responsibility initiatives in different economic areas to address security, social, water, health and education needs.
Organisations that have benefited include Nust, Danhiko project in Harare, Coptal Block in Gwanda, Mount Darwin Community Clinic and their most recent the renovation of the Bulawayo Central ZRP Front offices which are equipped with CCTV, among other projects.
Gwanda District Medical Officer Dr Admire Muza said the district was faced with shortage of ambulances as it only had two before the donation by PPC which he said was greatly affecting their health service delivery.
