PREMIER High School in Pumula South was yesterday awarded a prize for coming out first in the Bulawayo provincial blood donors’ school competion. The school, which has been the province’s best for the past three years, received two computers, a printer, two Internet dongles, 100 T-shirts, a certificate and two shields courtesy of NetOne.
Speaking during the occasion at the school, National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) regional customer relations manager Mr Sifundo Ngwenya urged pupils to continue donating blood.
“We are delighted to be at Premier High School again and we hope the pupils are going to continue saving lives by donating their blood. We would like to encourage other schools to be active in this programme so that we save lives,” said Mr Ngwenya.
In a speech read on his behalf by an official from his company Mr Victor Matina, NetOne managing director Mr Reward Kangai urged youths to desist from abusing drugs and alcohol as it affected their future.
“We need blood to stay alive and since youths are the main blood donors they should stay away from drugs and alcohol.
“They also need to secure their future by working hard in their studies so that on completion of their education they contribute to the development of the country,” said Mr Kangai.
He said NetOne partnered with NBSZ to increase the prizes for this year to $40 000 for winners in all the provinces.
The collection of blood in the country increased from 75 949 units in 2011 to 81779 in 2012.
