It was a sad start to the Glamour Boys’ campaign but their rivals CAPS United, Highlanders, Motor Action and newly-promoted FC Platinum all got off to flying starts.
Highlanders emerged the biggest winners of the opening week after thrashing visiting Shabanie Mine 3-0 at Barbourfields on Sunday.
Highlanders got their goals through Erick Mudzingwa, Graham Ncube and forgotten former Railstars striker Njabulo Ncube.
Bosso dominated the midfield where newboy Simon Munawa made his presence felt.
Indeed, good times seem to be returning for the Bosso fans who have witnessed a remarkable improvement in their team’s performance since Mkuphali Masuku took over the reins from Egyptian Mohamed Fathy last season.
Masuku seems to have got the fans approval and with a backing of 10 000 supporters on Sunday, Highlanders just could not disappoint as they collected maximum points and claim top spot on the log table.
But Masuku, although delighted by the start, remains modest.
“We wanted to just enjoy our football and I think the guys did that. Tactically I think we were better than them in the midfield,” he said.
Reigning Premiership kings Motor Action managed to recover from a troubled week to start their title defence on a positive note after beating Black Mambas 2-0 at Motor Action Sports Club on Saturday.
Assistant coaches David George and Prince Matore ensured the Mighty Bulls started on a good note as their coach Joey Antipas was away on national team duty in Mali.
Veteran midfielder Isaac Masame scored the opening goal early in the third minute and Soccer Star of the Year finalist Allen Gahadzikwa sealed the match with a well-struck effort in the 62nd minute.
Cash-rich FC Platinum announced their arrival on the domestic Premiership scene with a 2-0 win over Shooting Stars at Maglas.
FC Platinum have made their intentions clear in their first year of top-flight football after assembling an expensive side comprising some of the best performing players in the previous season.
The former Motor Action pair of Charles Sibanda and Bhekimpilo Ncube grabbed the winning goals in the second half after the two teams had failed to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.
DeMbare were beaten by a strike by William Manondo in the 68th minute after Kiglon applied themselves well and managed to neutralise their passing game at Rufaro on Sunday. Lloyd Mutasa’s men never recovered from the blow and, as with the previous seasons, Dynamos failed to break the Kiglon curse.
The opening week also witnessed three sets of draws as 2008 champions Gunners shared the spoils in a goalless match with Hwange at the Colliery while debutantes Blue Ribbon and Chicken Inn were involved in a 2-2 deadlock.
Masvingo United and Monomotapa drew 0-0 at Mucheke.
