Junior championships set to start today in Gaborone.
The championships were originally scheduled for Egypt but were moved to Botswana due to the political unrest that rocked the north African country last month.
The competition is set to start today with a warm-up tournament, which will run until April 3, and the main event is pencilled for April 4 to 8.
Zimbabwe will be pinning their hopes on players such as Benjamin Lock in the boys’ 18-and-Under category while in the girls’ category the limelight will be on Pauline Chawafambira.
In the boys’ 14-and-Under, Tadiwa Chinamo comes in as the favourite. Chinamo reached the semi-finals of the African Junior Championships’ Zonal qualifiers held in Harare in January. Nicole Dzenga will lead the girls’ team in the same age group in their quest for success.
The 14-year-old was last month ranked Africa’s number one in the girls’ 14-and-Under age group
Team coach, Richmore Murape, said they were hoping for good results from individuals at the tournament.
“We have hopes of doing well, we are looking at players like Benji, they can give us better results.
“Valeria has been doing well in South Africa and Nicole has also been doing well standing her ground very well.
“However, our challenge comes from South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt, Madagascar and Morocco. We have been ranging in the top five for the past years,” said Murape.
