Tendai Mugabe at the UNITED NATIONS, New York —
President Mugabe will today address the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly here. The President who is known for his fearless and candid criticism of Western hypocrisy on world issues is expected to deliver his address around midnight, Zimbabwe time.On Tuesday, President Mugabe held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Mr Wang Yi who is also Beijing’s head of delegation to the 68th session of the UNGA.
Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi who attended the meeting told journalists here that the President and Mr Wang discussed several bilateral issues.
“As you know the Chinese delegation to the UN is being led by the Foreign Minister so we had already arranged for a meeting with the head of the Chinese delegation,” he said. “It was a very good meeting discussing a wide range on our bilateral relations but with particular emphasis on strengthening our economic co-operation,” he said.
He said what they raised during the meeting would be discussed in greater detail on a later date.
Minister Mumbengegwi who also represented Zimbabwe in the Millennium Development Goals meeting held on Monday said most African countries would not be able to meet the 2015 target.
“It is quite clear that the overwhelming majority of developing countries will not be able to meet all the MDGs,” he said.
“The general consensus is that for Africa the countries are completely out in five of the eight MDGs. What this means is that in the post 2015 development agenda the issue of the MDGs that have not yet been achieved must be continued.”
