PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster following Wednesday’s road accident that claimed 10 lives at the 185km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road, near Suswe.
All 10 victims were travelling in a Honda Fit that collided head-on with a Harare-bound haulage truck.
The declaration of a State of Disaster was announced in terms of the Civil Protection Act.
“On behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe, I extend my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” he said in a statement released by acting Local Government and Public Works Minister Felix Mhona.
“Losing so many lives in a single accident is a profound national tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are mourning.
“Government, through the Civil Protection Department and relevant agencies, will provide the necessary assistance to the affected families, including support towards funeral arrangements and other immediate needs.”
President Mnangagwa said the incident highlights the “urgent need” to decisively address illegal transport operations and reckless driving on the roads, vowing that the nation cannot continue to lose innocent lives due to negligence and an utter disregard for traffic laws.
“The Government will enforce road regulations firmly to protect the travelling public.
“I urge all road users – drivers, passengers and pedestrians – to exercise maximum caution, respect traffic rules and prioritise safety all times,” added President Mnangagwa.
He urged people to work together to prevent such tragedies to ensure roads are safe for everyone.
