PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has donated US$5 000 towards the medical needs of veteran freedom fighter Cde Benson Nicholas Kadzinga, popularly known by his nom de guerre, Cde Sadat Kufamazuva.
Cde Kufamazuva is a former aide to Zanu PF National Chairman, Cde Herbert Chitepo, who died in Zambia in 1975 when a bomb was planted in his car at his residence in Lusaka, Zambia.
Cde Sadat was in the car and survived the blast, which instantly claimed the lives of Cde Chitepo and his other aide Silas Shamiso and a child who was playing in the yard next door.
The donation was handed over in Mt Darwin yesterday by the Institute of African Knowledge chairman Professor Simbi Veke Mubako.
Prof Mubako said President Mnangagwa had wanted to personally visit Cde Sadat, but his busy schedule had made it impossible.
“I conveyed the message as we discussed previously. The President wanted to come, but his schedule became busy. He then sent me to come with the donation. He has given me US$5 000 from his pocket, and this donation is for you to be helped in your medication,” said Prof Mubako.
Cde Sadat said he was deeply touched by President Mnangagwa’s intervention and expressed his gratitude for the assistance.
“I want to thank H.E President Mnangagwa for the donation. It will go a long way towards my medication. With this donation, I will deliberate with my wife to see how I can be assisted medically. She is taking good care of me,” he said.
His gratitude was also extended to Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who recently intervened after learning that his health condition had worsened.
“However, as I pass my gratitude, my wish is to make this in person to President Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga. He also helped me last week when he heard that my condition had worsened. He sent people to collect me to see a doctor”.
Cde Sadat also paid tribute to Prof Mubako, whom he affectionately described as “gweta rangu, baba vangu”, thanking him for travelling from Harare to hand over President Mnangagwa’s donation.
