“WE made a promise to bury each other during the liberation struggle and that promise is now being fulfilled by President Mnangagwa.”
This was said by Zanu PF Secretary for Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees, and Restrictees, Cde Douglas Mahiya at the 7th National Executive Council meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Harare yesterday.
He said during the war, comrades had vowed that no fighter would be abandoned, whether they died in battle or away from home and the current leadership had taken decisive steps to honour that undertaking.
He commended the President for assigning Vice President Kembo Mohadi to assess liberation war shrines in neighbouring countries.
“I also want to express my sincere gratitude to the President for assigning Vice President Mohadi to visit Angola, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique to get first-hand information on the state of affairs of places where massacres were done by Rhodesian forces,” he said.
“Such a move by the party and Government raises our hopes that they are aware of the needy for repatriation, reburials and related processes to bring closure to families of deceased Veterans.”
Cde Mahiya said the initiative was critical in paving the way for repatriations, reburials and related processes that would bring closure to families of deceased veterans.
“Surely, the Government must be enjoined to avail resources towards repatriating and reburying thousands of veterans who still lie in shallow and unmarked graves in and outside the country,” he said.
He reminded delegates that the courage exhibited and sacrifices endured by both the fallen and the surviving heroes of the liberation struggle would always be remembered, urging members to stand and observe a minute of silence in remembrance of departed Comrades.
