PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday received a prison shirt with his first prison number 176/64, similar to what he wore at Hwahwa Detention Centre in 1964. The presenter, Bernadette Tariro Bara told ZBC News last night, that as a young patriot she wanted the young generation to know the road travelled by such an iconic figure as President Mugabe, who had to endure pain and suffering for Zimbabwe to be free.
“We want the youths to understand this iconic role in the freedom we have. Presently in schools and even in my generation we did not learn the history of our country, we learnt about the world wars.
“So for us to defend our sovereignty, we have to understand the value of whatever we have to defend. We have to defend our rights and the fruits of our revolution,” said Bara.
Another present came from a Zimbabwean who played a key role in Livingstone, Zambia by hosting freedom fighters and refugees on their way to join the liberation struggle.
Mr John Whilson Mudzingwa captured a collection of pictures and presented them to President Mugabe at the Zanu-PF headquarters in Harare.
Mr Mudzingwa said the two items presented some of the memorable moments of Cde Mugabe’s days in Zambia.
President Mugabe chronicled the ups and downs of the struggle, including the challenges they faced as a liberation movement and party.
President Mugabe was imprisoned by the Smith regime between 1964 and 1975, and soon after his release after 11 years behind bars, he crossed the border into Mozambique in the company of Chief Rekayi Tangwena and Cde Edgar Tekere (both late) where he led the liberation struggle, and only returned home in 1980, ahead of the historic elections that ushered independence and democracy. — ZBC News/Herald Reporter.
