President signs law banning underage sex

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has signed to law the Criminals Laws Amendment (Protection of Children and Young Persons Act 2024) that criminalises having sex with persons under the age of 18 years.

The new amendment was gazetted on the Extraordinary Government Gazette of 18 September.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana confirm the gazette on his X.

“The Criminals Laws Amendment (Protection of Children and Young Persons Act 2024 (Number 1) has been consented to by the President.

“It is a criminal act to have sex with persons under the age of 18 years. It is not an acceptable Defence that they consented. It is a serious offence to infect a child with an STI,” posted Mr Mangwana.
