President to lead Heroes Day commemorations

“As I speak, I am coming from the shrine and as a committee we are convinced we are ready for the commemorations,” he said.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations will be held on Tuesday at the National Sports Stadium.
President Mugabe will officiate at both occasions.
“We are ready, we have been to the Heroes’ Acre several times and everything is in place.
Local Government, Rural, and Urban Development Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo said transport will be available at the usual pick-up points (see panel). Minister Chombo urged people to be punctual by catching the earliest buses.
Meanwhile the Harare-Bulawayo Highway outside the National Sports Stadium between Golden Quarry Road and Mutley Bend will be closed to facilitate the free movement of traffic for those attending the Heroes Day celebrations today and Defence Forces celebrations tomorrow.
Through traffic is being diverted north along the two roads on each side of the stadium to Kirkman Road, to the north of the stadium.
In a statement, police spokesperson Chief Inspector Blessmore Chishaka said motorists are advised to use new routes that have been opened for cars which head both ways. “Blocking the road would minimise traffic congestion to and from the two venues.”
Motorists coming from Harare and heading to Bulawayo will turn right at Mutley Bend, drive along Kirkman and then turn left in Golden Quarry Road which leads back to Bulawayo Road.
Cars coming from the Bulawayo direction and heading to Harare are also advised to turn left at Golden Quarry Road and join Kirkman Road behind the National Sports Stadium which leads them to town,” he said
Chief Inspector Chishaka said no vehicles would be parked at the Heroes Acre during the period of the two national events.
“There will be no parking space at the Heroes’ Acre and people are advised to park their cars at the National Sports Stadium.”
