rounds at the beginning of the week and that has seen the numbers plunge to less than 100 shootists.
The competition will run until Saturday and President Mugabe is expected to present the prizes to winners on Sunday.
The Zimbabwe National Army is hosting the premier shooting competition.
Chief Range Office squadron, Tamuka Mangena, said they were now in the finals of the competition, which began on Monday.
“The eliminations of the tournament were done simultaneously in different centres.
“There were events on 9-14 July at Willowdale Range in Matopos with more than 100 participants and at Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru which had over 200 contestants.
“The third event was held at Cleveland Rifle Range with over 400 participants.
“The finals have 48 male and 48 female uniformed forces members with the top 24 in each category remaining.
“On Friday the civilians will join the competition while the war veterans will compete on the last day which will be Saturday,” Mangena said.
Frederik Gobo won the event in the male category last year while Locadia Chakwakuka won in the women’s section.
Gobo amassed 535 points and was 10 points clear of runner-up Mike Masiya.
Chakwakuka secured 466 points to emerge the winner.
Both defending champions are hopeful of doing well again, this time around, with Gobo saying he has prepared well for the event.
“It is everyone’s wish to win such a prestigious tournament and I hope to keep the trophy as I have prepared well,” said Gobo. Chakukwa is also confident she will be triumphant this year.
“I hope to repeat the good outing and do well in the tournament,” she said.
