The party yesterday said there was a need for Government to ensure that Tongaat Hullet focuses only on sugar cane milling while over 30 000 hectares of state land under sugar cane that is held by the company be distributed among the poor communities.
Tongaat Hullet has of late been on a collision course with Government owing to the company’s apparent reluctance to conform with the country’s indigenisation laws.
Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial executive member and legal secretary for the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Committee, Cde Ted Muzoroza, said Government should move with speed to indigenise Tongaat Hullet.
“We hope Government is going to put more pressure on Tongaat Hullet and make sure that rural communities in the Lowveld and the entire Masvingo province specialise in growing sugar cane on the company’s estates while Tongaat Hullet focuses on sugar cane milling,” said Cde Muzoroza. “If we manage to achieve that then we would have empowered thousands of poor rural communities in Masvingo who are yearning for economic independence after waiting in the periphery from 1980.’’
Cde Muzorora hailed the launch of the Masvingo Community Share Ownership Trusts by President Mugabe saying the programme was going to uplift the lives of impoverished villagers in poor rural communities.
