Catholic priest Father Fredrick Mabiri died in a road accident early Saturday morning after his vehicle collided with a truck along the Chinhoyi-Chegutu Road.

The accident occurred around 3 am about 25km from Chegutu when his Toyota Hilux reportedly encroached into the lane of an oncoming truck near Musengezi Bridge.

Father Mabiri died on the spot while those in the other truck escaped with minor injuries.

People at the scene said it took several hours for the Chegutu Fire Brigade to remove the vehicle from under the truck.

Mr David Tavengwa, an eye witness, said he heard a loud bang from his house which is about 200 metres away from the scene.

Mr Josphat Chikomo who was on the scene said the area is now a black spot after another accident killed two people last week.

“The impact was massive, there was no way the driver could survive. We are having a lot of accidents on this stretch,” he said.

The Chinhoyi Diocese’s social communications confirmed the death on their Facebook page.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on of Rev. Fr Fredrick T. Mabiri in the early hours of today,” reads the condolence message. He was involved in a fatal road accident at Musengezi Bridge in Murombedzi.”
