Prime Minister Tsvangirai comes under fire over salaries

“Ungaphi umfazi wakho (We want to know where is your wife),” said the man before being blocked by Mr Tsvangirai’s bodyguards.
At that point Mr Tsvangirai looked lost and briefly froze much to the amusement of the Gwanda crowd.

Mr Tsvangirai was customarily married to Ms Tembo after paying US$36 000 bride price only for him to terminate the wedding after 12 days.
The Prime Minister’s marriage saga is complicated by the fact that the Karimatsenga family is still insisting that their daughter is still married to the MDC-T leader and would remain in Mr Tsvangirai’s home in Buhera.

After the confrontation Mr Tsvangirai’s bodyguards chased away part of the crowd during the tour, claiming they were not genuine civil servants.
“We don’t believe that the people who were making noise during the proceedings are genuine civil servants, they could have been sent by some of our opponents to cause mayhem here so they should go,” said one of Mr Tsvangirai’s bodyguards.

In his defence Mr Tsvangirai said the Government had revisited the issue of civil servants more than once.
“I am sure you will recall that the issue of the civil servants’ salaries has been visited many times and we both know that your salaries have been reviewed once or so since I made that promise,” said Mr Tsvangirai.

Speaking during the course of the tour, Mr Tsvangirai said there was a need for civil servants to be motivated, as they played a key role in society.
“I don’t see a reason why civil servants should continue living like rats hence the Government will look for means to raise funds so that we put up good accommodation in institutions they operate from,” said Mr Tsvangirai.

He said the Government would soon conclude its assessment of unfinished projects in the country, after which they would complete them in order of priority.
“The purpose of us touring such projects is for us to have a clear view of what needs to be done project by project so that we are able to plan effectively,” said Mr Tsvangirai.

He also noted with concern that the Matabeleland South province was facing critical food shortages.
Public Works Minister Joel Gabuza Gabbuza was part of the team that accompanied Mr Tsvangirai and they also toured the unfinished Gwanda Magistrates Court building, Gwanda Provincial Hospital,

and Filabusi District Hospital among other projects in Matabeleland South.
Before visiting Gwanda Mr Tsvangirai had also toured some Government projects in Beitbridge.
