Presidential spokesperson Cde George Charamba confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.
“The principals met following a decision made in Cabinet on Tuesday that the principals, legal minds and negotiators must meet today (Wednesday) at State House,” he said.
Cde Charamba said Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa, who was not able to participate in Tuesday’s debate in Cabinet, attended yesterday’s State House meeting.
President Mugabe has proclaimed July 31 as the election day, but Sadc urged him to seek a two-week extension following pleas from the MDC formations.
The MDC formations are reluctant to go for elections following predictions by international organisations that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would lose to Zanu-PF in the upcoming polls.
The inclusive Government, which has outlived its lifespan, has been affected by discord on key policy issues.
The Constitutional Court recently ruled that elections should be held before July 31 after Zaka-registered voter Mr Jealousy Mawarire approached it seeking the elections to be held by June 29 when the life of the Seventh Parliament expires.
President Mugabe complied with the court ruling and proclaimed that the elections would be held on July 31 and that the nomination court for presidential, parliamentary and council candidates sits on June 28.
Minister Chinamasa has since gone back to the Constitutional Court to seek an extension of the July 31 deadline after Sadc urged the parties to seek a two-week extension.
