“I HAVE a request your worship, when you look at me do I look like a woman? Other men in prison are proposing love to me in front of prison officials. Those who are cowards are being sodomised. My life is in danger as fellow inmates are threatening to put poison in my food since I’m refusing to sleep with them and I’m even scared to eat my food,” pleaded a rape suspect when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate yesterday.
Provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo told Munyaradzi Nyoni, 34, that he will notify prison officials about the matter for corrective measures to be taken.
Nyoni is at Khami remand prison awaiting trial for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in November last year.
He was not asked to plead and was further remanded in custody to April, 8.
Prosecuting Mufaro Mageza told the court that on November 7, 2014, at around 9PM, the teenage girl was standing at her parents house’s gate with her boyfriend when Nyoni approached.
“Sensing danger, as Nyoni was acting weird, the girl tried to escape but he grabbed her by the neck and led her towards a water reservoir in New Magwegwe. He then ordered the girl to remove her skin tight after threatening to assault her and pushed her on the ground,” said Mageza.
He said Nyoni raped the girl and afterwards escorted her home, leaving her when she had entered the gate.
The girl told her aunt about the matter and it was reported to the police leading to Nyoni’s arrest.
The threats against Nyoni, come two weeks after two Khami Remand Prison inmates were allegedly caught red-handed by fellow inmates sodomising each other in their cell.
Christopher Jani, 36, allegedly sodomised Mbonisi Ncube, 28, with his consent around 3AM.
The offence was discovered by another inmate Edgar Majasi who removed the blanket which Jani and Ncube were covering themselves with and caught them in the act.
The matter was reported to prison officials leading to their arrest.
