Government has called for the involvement of private players in the housing sector for the country to achieve the 25 000 houses per year target outlined in the Zim-Asset blueprint.
Under the five-year plan, Government should provide 125 000 housing units or serviced stands by December 2018.
Speaking at the commissioning of 20 garden flats built by a local company, Homelux Properties, in Harare yesterday, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo said decent housing was a basic human right.
“Saddled with a housing backlog of 1,25 million housing units, let me accept that the deficit is a mammoth task for both Government and local authorities to deliver alone,” he said.
Homelux Properties managing director Justin Machibaya, applauded the rezoning of certain areas in Harare which has allowed development of cluster homes.
