Produce surplus for resale: Minister

VILLAGERS must up the production of any farming venture they are embarking on in order to produce more and sell the surplus for sustainable community development, Zanu-PF’s national secretary for production and labour Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire has said. Addressing villagers at a field day held at Tiya Village in Chimanimani last Saturday, Cde Mavhaire said communities must embrace commercial farming techniques to produce more for resale.

He urged cattle farmers in Tiya to cross-breed their herd and come up with breeds that produce more meat and milk.
“It is difficult to grow crops here, but you can do well with cattle. You need to cross-breed your cattle and come up with breeds that will fetch more on the market. Companies like the Cold Storage Company and Bata have downsized their operations because you were not supplying enough cattle and hides respectively to sustain their operations. If you embrace commercial ways to rear your cattle we will be able to increase the national herd and then sell the surplus. This is what the Government wants. We want you to be employers by creating jobs for others.”

He urged AREX officials to disseminate important information to farmers that will help them boost their yields.
“Our beef is well known the world over as good quality meat, but of late we are not producing enough. Let us be serious and produce more cattle,” he said.

Chimanimani East Member of the House of Assembly Dr Samuel Undenge said people who were not getting down to work and feed the nation were enemies because they were failing party programmes.

“We are bringing several income-generating projects to communities which you must fully utilise and produce more to feed your families and the community. Supporting Zanu-PF is not confined to chanting slogans only, but you need to ensure that programmes or projects are fully implemented. As a community leader, I shall continuously move around and see whether party projects are moving well because communities must be self sustainable.”

Farmers were also told of the need to replant tress and revive orchards at schools in the area.
