Producer’s GBV film in limbo

A HARARE-BASED film producer is appealing for US$1 200 to launch a new film titled ‘‘The Remnant’’, which tackles Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Evans Dakwa, who is the script-writer and producer, ldris Manganda (director) and Oliver Mtafer (executive producer), confirmed they had finished shooting and editing all the episodes.

However, the trio said they were failing to launch the final product due to financial constraints.

“We, as a crew, have finished shooting and editing The Remnant but the main challenge is money to launch our finished product.

“The main challenge we are experiencing in the film industry is lack of funding, support for film production is non-existent, corporates want to jump on a finished product but are not willing to invest from the beginning.

“This concept has been there for three years but production was only made possible this year with very limited funds,” said Dakwa.

He claimed that GBV cascades to children and anyone can be a victim.

“GBV has been declared a national disaster by the Government and it interlinks with a lot of issues including child abuse, HIV, and Aids.

“The main concept of the film is to raise awareness on the linkages between GBV and other problems and how societal norms and values that, on the surface we term obsolete, are still so much entrenched in our society driving the incidences of GBV,” Dakwa said.

His hope was to launch the film during the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence ending on December 10.
