ZIMBABWE Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) director-general Professor Edson Gandiwa has called for stronger collaboration, innovation and inclusive participation in wildlife conservation to ensure sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.
Speaking at the First ZimParks International Wildlife Conservation Symposium held in Harare under the theme, “Wildlife Conservation and Sustainable Development,” Prof Gandiwa said the two-day event marked a major milestone in efforts to protect Zimbabwe’s biodiversity.
“The symposium marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to safeguard our natural heritage,” he said.
Prof Gandiwa said the symposium was focusing on eight key areas — Wildlife Conservation and Transboundary Management, Freshwater and Fisheries Management, Sustainable Tourism, Human-Wildlife Interactions, Environmental Health, Climate Change, Community-Based Natural Resources Management, and Policy and Governance.
“Each thematic area presents an opportunity for collaboration, innovation, and action,” he said.
Prof Gandiwa said wildlife conservation was a key pillar of sustainable development as ecosystem health directly influences livelihoods, culture and economic prosperity.
