Professor Ngwenya defends Chief Dakamela’s fashion sense

Professor Solwayo Ngwenya has come to the defence of Chief Mbusi Dakamela of Nkayi, Matabeleland North, amid a social media debate over the traditional leader’s fashion choices.

The debate intensified following Chief Dakamela’s appearance at this year’s King Mzilikazi Day celebrations, with some social media users questioning how the chief should dress at cultural gatherings.

The chief was wearing a modernised cultural outfit designed by renowned designer Zana’ Kay. However, Chief Dakamela styled the outfit with slim trousers, a combination that some social media users criticised as uncultured. Some suggested that they would prefer Chief Dakamela to wear a full traditional outfit, such as the one he usually wears at his Imiklomela kaDakamela ceremonies, as it gives him the posture, dignity, and status he deserves.

Ngwenya, a traditionalist, however, urged people to focus on the significance of the occasion rather than the chief’s attire.

In a message accompanying a photograph of himself with Chief Dakamela at this year’s Annual Dance Festival, Ngwenya said the two had dressed according to their preferences and enjoyed the occasion.
“We dressed as we wished, and had a wonderful time. Those who missed this year’s dance festival can attend next year. The pudding is not in the dress code but in the occasion of remembering and honouring our great people,” he said.

Ngwenya further encouraged Chief Dakamela to remain comfortable with his fashion choices, saying there was still plenty of time for the traditional leader to experiment with different styles.
“Dress as you like Chief Dakamela, you have so many years ahead of you to try all the dress codes, importantly dress as your gut feelings say, there could be a reason for it,” he said.

Chief Dakamela has in recent years become increasingly visible in cultural and heritage initiatives in Matabeleland North, including events celebrating community achievements and Ndebele heritage, such as his own initiative, Imiklomela kaDamela Cultural Festival.
