One of Zimbabwe’s most talented and yet underrated musicians, Progress Chipfumo, held his own at the weekend when he performed at Club Red 32 in Southerton, Harare. Progress, who lives in the suburb, had a great time singing for his home crowd which cheered on from start to finish. The gig had all the makings of a thriller, with dancers who captivated the crowd with their amazing traditional dances. The four girls, who also double as backing vocalists for Progress, really know how to get down.

For some obscure reason, Progress — who made his entrance on the music scene as a member of the famed Hohodza Band — is failing to take his act to where it should be.

It’s about time he steps up his game.
With a smash hit album “Hold My Hand” to his credit, this should be his time to shine but alas, he is playing second fiddle to musicians like Jah Prayzah and Suluman Chimbetu.

Just recently, Jah Prayzah spoke of how he used to curtain raise for Progress, but somehow things have changed and it is now Progress who is opening for Jah Prayzah.

Well, that is the nature of the music industry, people always want you when you’re on top and nobody comes around when your star stops shining.
Progress is a talented lead guitarist and you cannot deny the fact that he is also a good composer and music arranger.

Songs such as “Tsiurika”, “Amai”, “Mangerengere” and “Havakausiyi” show his great artistry and yet not many people appreciate his music.
However, he needs to be confident and be serious about his art first, so that fans also take him seriously. It is never too late to bounce back considering that superstar Oliver Mtukudzi took long to make a breakthrough in music.

The same can happen to Progress and all he needs to do is believe in himself.
