Promote livestock

She said these were the backbone of the province’s economic activities. Governor Masuku said the Government should mobilise more money for farmers involved in animal husbandry. She said most of the areas in Matabeleland region were drought prone and formed the bulk of producers of beef and other species of livestock. The Governor also raised concern over the delay by Treasury to release funds for the animal husbandry and game ranching projects.
“We are appealing to Government to support livestock producers especially in this part of the country where cattle rearing, game ranching and irrigation farming are the sources of livelihood.
“These farmers need to be assisted with equipment to harvest stock feeds, buy vaccines and the requisite training. We need funds to buy seven rollers for the whole province that will be used for harvesting cattle feeds throughout the year. This process will help shame those who are involved in veldfires that destroy vast tracts of grazing land. It is very worrying that the Cold Storage Company has done everything necessary in anticipation of livestock production, but the treasury is yet to avail funds to that effect,” she said.
