Prophet Magaya’s wife loses car over tax evasion

Prophetic Healing Deliverance Ministries leader Prophet Walter Magaya’s wife Tendai has lost her vehicle, a Landrover Discovery valued at $116,000, after it was seized by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority on allegations of evading duty. The vehicle had been given to Magaya’s wife as a gift by Admire Mango, a senior overseer at PHD Ministries for Chitungwiza area.

Mango bought the car through a local car dealer, Upenyu Prosper Mashangwa, 35, the managing director of Oceane Perfumes.

Mashangwa allegedly evaded duty by manufacturing fake documents for the vehicle despite being paid the full amount required to import the car from South Africa by Mango.

Mashangwa yesterday appeared in court before magistrate Tendai Mahwe charged with fraud.

He was granted $300 bail coupled with some stringent conditions, among them surrendering his passport and to report once a week to the police.

Mahwe remanded him to April 30.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleged that on July 15 last year, Mango decided to acquire a vehicle for Tendai Magaya.

He then sought for a car dealer who could import a Landrover Discovery 4, 2014, model for him and was referred to Mashangwa by Gilbert Mafusire.

Mango and Mashangwa allegedly entered into a verbal agreement that he would import the vehicle from South Africa and deliver it by August 22 last year.

It is the State’s case that Mashangwa was given $80,000 which he said was enough to import the vehicle.

Mashangwa imported the said vehicle on September 15 last year and approached Mango asking for $36,000 which he said was for the payment of duty and registration process.

Instead of paying the prescribed duty, Mashangwa, it is alleged, forged the customs clearance certificate and manufactured a vehicle registry book.

He misrepresented facts to Zimra and the organisation acted upon the misrepresentation and made him to pay $900 dollars only for duty.

The vehicle was fraudulently registered with the Central Vehicle Registry.

The anomalies were later discovered by Zimra on March 13 this year, prompting the vehicle seizure and the subsquent issuing of a notice of seizure to Tendai Magaya.
