THE Plumtree High School Old Boys known as the Prunitians have set up a fund to buy material to repair a monumental double storey hostel reduced to a shell in an inferno at the school last month.
Lloyd hostel, which housed 120 pupils, was razed by a fire in a case of suspected arson.
The Prunitians, who had been busy renovating the school when tragedy struck, have set up a Rebuild Lloyd Fund.
The inferno has rendered pupils shelter-less when schools open on Tuesday next week.
Prunitians spokesperson Mr Roy Tapela yesterday confirmed the set up of the fund and said they were waiting for directions from the Government, parents and school authorities on how to proceed.
“We are waiting to hear from these major stakeholders on what they have planned so that we assist them. We have set up a fund called Rebuild Lloyd. Old Boys can get more details about this issue by emailing me or sending text messages on my WhatsApp number, which they have,’ said Mr Tapela.
He said their interventions at the school were informal as they were in the process of resuscitating the official Old Prunitians Society.
“It’s noteworthy that our interventions so far have been informal — just a bunch of Old Boys that know each other who decided to get involved. You might be aware of the painting project that was covered in your publication. This was very successful. We then decided to assist every year,” Mr Tapela said.
He revealed that they once assessed the buildings and pointed out to authorities the dangers hostels were facing particularly from electrical hazards.
Mr Tapela said although investigations pointed to arson, they were in the process of setting up contingency measures in case of fire.
“We then put everything on hold until we knew the cause of the fire. We have since read in the paper that it was arson. As Old Boys of Plumtree School we have been busy with various interventions at the school for the past two years,” he said.
Mr Tapela said they were holding their first Prunitians Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 15 years in July this year. — @richardmuponde
