THE Public Service Commission (PSC) has called on the nation to ensure that the promising lives of young people are not destroyed through drug and substance abuse.
The call was made by Mrs Lynette Chabata, a trainer at Elangeni Training Institute in Bulawayo, during the provincial drug and substance abuse taskforce workshop being held at a lodge just outside the city.
Mrs Chabata was giving an overview of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and its relevance to interventions aimed at combating drug and substance abuse.
“Let us refuse to let the future of our youths just go like that,” said Mrs Chabata.
She said under the NDS2 (2026-2030), drug and substance abuse was treated not merely as a social nuisance, but as a direct threat to national security, human capital development, economic productivity and the achievement of Vision 2030 targets.
“It recognises substance abuse as a major development challenge,” said Mrs Chabata.
She said the scourge therefore required coordinated interventions involving Government, communities and other stakeholders to safeguard young people and protect the country’s development gains.
The workshop is being attended by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, who is also the committee chairperson, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, church leaders and members of the Joint Operations Command.
