PSI, FUZ to fight HIV in sport

at Motor Sports Club yesterday.
The US Embassy, through the US President’s Emergency Plan For Aids Relief (PERFAR), promised the union a US$60 000 grant to support the new partnership.
FUZ president Desmond Maringwa hailed the new deal.
“This is the second time and the association is happy that we are able to get into this deal and we are hoping not to end and we look forward to incorporate women footballers and other players in the near feature.
“As footballers we feel honoured to be involved in these initiatives as we are viewed as role models,” Maringwa said.
CAPS United player Gilbert Mapemba also echoed the same sentiments.
“It is difficult for young players to manage fame but I think this partnership will go a long way in educating us,” Mapemba said.
The PSI interpersonal communications manager, Patience Kunaka, welcomed the partnership.
“We have managed to reach out to more than 480 coaches. The initiative has also managed to see us educate footballers on comprehensive Hiv/Aids prevention measures.
“I urge footballers to be role models to young people by avoiding getting and spreading Aids,” said Kunaka.
US ambassador to Zimbabwe Char-les Ray was hopeful the partnership will work out.
“First it was a partnership with PSI and now it is FUZ,” he said.
“We had the idea in 2003 as a five-year plan but because it was bearing fruits we extended it to 2013 and I hope this will work out.”
