The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League returns this weekend, and with it comes the start of what is expected to be a tight and exciting second half of the season. Teams across the country are back in action for Matchday 18, which marks the beginning of the return fixtures. At this stage of the campaign, every point matters more, whether clubs are chasing the title, aiming for a top-eight finish or fighting to stay clear of relegation trouble.

In Bulawayo, attention will be firmly on Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, where Highlanders take on city rivals Bulawayo Chiefs in what promises to be a lively derby. Bosso go into the match with renewed confidence after picking up a hard-earned 1-0 win over Agama FC during the week. That result was only their fifth victory of the season, but it has come at the right time, giving the team a much-needed boost.

Coach Benjani Mwaruwari will be hoping his side can build on that momentum and put together a strong run.

Highlanders have shown signs of improvement in recent matches, and a win in the derby would go a long way in lifting both their position on the table and the mood among their supporters.

Bulawayo Chiefs, however, will not make it easy. They come into the match after a 1-1 draw against TelOne and will feel they have what it takes to frustrate their neighbours. Although Chiefs have struggled for consistency this season, they have shown glimpses of quality and will see this derby as the perfect chance to prove a point and disrupt Bosso’s progress.

Before that, on Saturday, Chicken Inn will be back at Barbourfields, where they face Herentals College in another important fixture. The Gamecocks are going through a difficult spell, having gone five matches without a win. That run has increased pressure on Coach Tonderayi Ndiraya, who will be desperate to turn things around.

Chicken Inn were held to a goalless draw by CAPS United in midweek, and they now face a Herentals side that is known for working hard and troubling more established teams. Herentals may not always dominate matches, but they are organised and energetic, and they have made a habit of picking up points where many do not expect them to.

Elsewhere, league leaders Hardrock face what could be their biggest test so far when they travel to Harare to play Scottland FC at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday. Both teams are chasing the title, and this match could have a big impact on how the race develops in the coming weeks.

Dynamos will also be in action at Rufaro, where they host TelOne. DeMbare will be looking to return to winning ways after settling for a draw against FC Hunters during the week. Playing at home, they will be expected to push for all three points.

In Zvishavane, FC Platinum host Ngezi Platinum Stars in a derby that is always competitive and physical. Matches between the two platinum sides are often difficult to predict, and this one is unlikely to be any different.

Simba Bhora, who have enjoyed a strong season so far, will be hoping to keep up their good form when they take on Manica Diamonds. Meanwhile, MWOS face FC Hunters in another fixture that could go either way.
Sunday’s matches also include ZPC Kariba against Triangle United at Nyamhunga Stadium, while Agama FC host CAPS United in what will be another test for the newcomers.

As the season enters its second half, the pressure is set to increase across the league. Teams can no longer afford to drop points easily, and every result will start to shape the final standings. For supporters, this means one thing — an exciting run of matches lies ahead, with plenty still to play for.
