THE Premier Soccer League faces a congested second half of the 2026 season, with cup competitions, CAF inter-club football, and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers threatening to create a fixtures bottleneck.
The league must now fit in the Chibuku Super Cup and the inaugural ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, which moves into the last 32.
Domestic club kings Scottland and cup winners Dynamos’ participation in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions will also add pressure to the calendar, as will the Warriors’ international commitments.
PSL chief executive officer Rodwell Thabe said discussions were underway to manage the load without compromising the league.
Thabe said the objective of their discussions with stakeholders was to ensure that despite the impending tight schedule, they would try to minimise disruptions to the fixture schedule.
“We have been working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure fixtures are planned and managed in a way that minimises disruption while maintaining the integrity of the competition,” Thabe said.
“We are confident in the systems and structures in place to accommodate the demands of the schedule.
“The focus is on effective coordination, timely communication, and flexibility where necessary to ensure that all competitions are completed smoothly without compromising quality or player welfare.” The Castle Lager Premiership heads into Matchday 21 this weekend, with several exciting fixtures lined up across the country.
The headline clash sees CAPS United take on Hardrock at Chahwanda Stadium on Sunday.
Giants Highlanders, who have shown signs of resurgence, host Simba Bhora at Barbourfields, while defending champions Scottland entertain sister club FC Hunters at Rufaro on Saturday as they seek to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Thabe expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the league this season, citing improved attendance and operational developments.
Among the key milestones has been the introduction of pre-match ticket sales and electronic ticketing systems, which have enhanced convenience for supporters and improved matchday management.
“There is always room for improvement,” Thabe explained.
“Going forward, we will continue working with clubs and stakeholders to enhance areas such as stadium facilities, access control, safety, security, entertainment and fan engagement activities before and during matches.
“We also want to leverage technology more effectively, particularly in e-ticketing and communication with supporters, to make attending matches more convenient.
“Our objective is to ensure that every fan enjoys a safe, comfortable and memorable matchday experience that keeps them coming back to the stadium,” said Thabe.
However, the season has not been without challenges. A few incidents have marred the smooth running of the competition, notably the violence at Chahwanda Stadium that led to the abandonment of the match between Hard-rock and Dynamos.
The case is still pending before the PSL Disciplinary Committee.
Thabe emphasised that violence has no place in football and noted that incidents of hooliganism have significantly declined compared to previous seasons.
“Incidents of violence at stadiums have reduced significantly compared to previous seasons, reflecting the progress that has been made across the league. However, the PSL remains firm in its stance against hooliganism and any form of violence,” Thabe said.
“We continue to work closely with security officials and the police and have strengthened security planning and enforcement at all venues to ensure safe and orderly matches.
“In addition, we are working with clubs to intensify awareness campaigns and fan education programmes, aimed at promoting responsible behaviour and safeguarding the integrity of the game.”
