PSL calendar in order — Ndebele

Two weekends ago, the Benjani Mwaruwari Testimonial match held on 26 May and Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Guinea at the National Sports Stadium forced the league to postpone matches.

Next Sunday, the Warriors travel to Maputo, Mozambique for the last match in the World Cup campaign this year before welcoming Burundi on 17 June in the Nations Cup qualifiers’ second leg match, seeking to overturn a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

After that it will be almost a month of action in the regional Council of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa) Senior Challenge tournament in Malawi.

It is the hectic schedule of the national team and Dynamos’ impending matches in the Confederation Cup that has raised fears of the season spilling over to next year.

With most stadiums having a poor drainage system, it will be difficult to play the matches once the rains start.

PSL chief executive officer, Kennedy Ndebele however said there was no need for the nation to press panic buttons over the fixtures.

“The calendar which we released early this year will be followed and everything is in order so far. Let us not create a situation where it will look as if there is chaos in the league when in fact everything is in order,” said Ndebele.

Sup8r sponsors, BancABC last week indicated that they would want to have their games spread over at least a month instead of having all the four quarter-finals played over the same weekend. The last tournament was won by Motor Action.

Asked to comment on the BancABC request, Nebele said: “The league is run by the PSL and BancABC are yet to make that request so for now I would rather not comment on that.”

BancABC head of marketing Cynthia Chizwina last week said that they had made proposals to the league and were awaiting a response.

Clubs have in the past criticised sponsors they accused of wanting to call the shots instead of leaving the running of the league to PSL.
