NOMINATIONS for the Castle Lager Premiership top posts closed yesterday with sources revealing that incumbent leader Twine Phiri will battle Dynamos boss Kenny Mubaiwa in a boardroom version of the “Harare Derby”.Zifa, however, were keeping the identity of the candidates who filed their nomination papers a closely-guarded secret even though this should be public material.
The Zifa Electoral Court is expected to meet and deliberate on the list before confirming the people who will be in the race for the top posts when elections are held on March 9 after being pushed from February 23.
The PSL clubs will now have to meet on February 23 to deliberate on their constitution and have it aligned with Zifa’s since they are an affiliate.
Clarity on corporate governance, roles and responsibilities of governors as well as secretariat are expected to be enshrined in the amended PSL constitution.
Zifa lawyer Ralph Maganga said the nominations were set to close last night while the vetting will commence immediately.
Nominations were supposed to be received for the chairman and the deputy chairmanship posts, under a constitution that is shutting out any other club executives, besides the chairperson, from making it onto the PSL board of governors.
Xolisani Gwelesa, the Zifa communications manager, said a decision had been made to keep the names of those running for the public office under the lid.
“We do not release the names of the candidates until after the verification,” said Gwesela.
But our Harare Bureau was informed that Phiri had submitted his name and could be facing Dynamos boss Mubaiwa whose papers were lodged with the nomination court.
There was also speculation last night that Peter Dube of Highlanders had been the sole nominee for the vice-chairman’s post.
