PSL: Relegation dogfight eclipses title race

IT’S a week of high stakes and high drama in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, with crucial fixtures that could shake up both ends of the table, from the title chase to the relegation scrap.

Highlanders will be fired up for maximum points when they host Triangle at Barbourfields Stadium on Wednesday. After a controversial 2-1 loss to Scottland, where they felt robbed by Terrence Dzvukamanja’s offside-looking second goal and a missed penalty by Marvin Sibanda, Bosso are out to unleash fury on the visitors.

The return of  Arthur Ndlovu and Mason Mushore from suspension adds steel to a team whose passionate fans demand more than just effort. With the club staying tight lipped on transfer window activity, fans arriving at Emagumeni know every match might come with a surprise debut.

In Harare, Herentals, seventh on 31 points and consistent, host a wounded Chicken Inn at Rufaro. A win for The Students will strengthen their top eight ambitions. They may lack the spending power  but Herentals always find a way to stay relevant.

For Chicken Inn, it’s unfamiliar territory. The 2015 champions are now peering into the relegation abyss. Sitting 14th, just two points above the drop zone, the Gamecocks need more than reputation to survive. Despite good funding and a decent squad, they’ve only mustered 23 points from 21 games.

The midweek headline act, though, could be in Gweru, where TelOne host defending champions and  log leaders Simba Bhora, in a match promising fireworks. Since Herbert Maruwa took over, TelOne have transformed from relegation fodder to title dark horses, now sitting fourth with 34 points. With 22 goals scored and just 15 conceded, they’re solid at both ends. And with league top scorer Washington Navaya, who’s now attracting interest from South African side Durban City, they’re a real threat.

Chris Mverechena’s reflexes in goal, supported by the towering Frank Mkarati, have given TelOne a sturdy backbone.

But Simba Bhora have their own rhythm, slick football, tight defending and a deadly front line. Joel Luphahla’s tactical nous and smart recruitment have kept the champions humming. They’ve bagged 43 points, three ahead of fast chasing MWOS and third placed Scottland.

On Thursday, Dynamos’ relegation battle rolls on. They host Manica Diamonds in what could be a classic between two sleeping giants trying to avoid the unthinkable. Once the kings of Zimbabwean football, DeMbare are now languishing in 17th place with 15 points, just nine ahead of doomed Kwekwe United.

Once the concern was their form at Rufaro. Now, it’s whether they even belong there anymore.

While goals remain scarce for Dynamos, their defence, sixth best in the league, gives them a glimmer of hope. Manica Diamonds, representing a city once home to greats like Nelson Bandura and Wonder Chisetera, are also desperate to avoid the drop. This one’s about more than points, it’s about pride and legacy.

Another scrap looms between Yadah and GreenFuel at Heart Stadium. Tied on 23 points and just hovering above danger, both know the three points could make the difference.

At the bottom, Kwekwe United’s trip to FC Platinum feels like a lamb headed to slaughter. Mapeza’s men are rediscovering their swagger and are sixth on the table. At Mandava, they’ll be eyeing blood.

Elsewhere, Bikita Minerals take on Scottland and CAPS United visit Ngezi Platinum Stars in fixtures with major top eight implications.
