The public has been challenged to continue prioritising the monthly national clean-up programmes to ensure the nation remains clean and safe from diseases.
The call was made by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Dr Apollonia Munzverengwi in a speech read on her behalf by her Secretary Mr Tavabarira Kutamahufa during a provincial clean-up exercise held at Mutoko Centre today.
The national clean-up campaign is being held under the theme: “Fight flash floods through litter-free storm drains”.
“As the 2024 rainy season draws closer let us focus on clearing of storm drains to reduce flash flooding during summer,” she said.
“I encourage respective local authorities to put in place drain covers to prevent further blockages and to ensure the safety of the public.
“My humble appeal to members of the public is to prioritise the monthly National Clean-Up Programme which was declared by President Mnangagwa.
“My observations are that some of the clean-up exercises are being done mainly at Government institutions and few public places, a lot must be done at household level, business centres, vending areas and along road servitudes.”
She urged the church and community leaders to play a part in disseminating information on the importance of waste management.
“Following the provincial launch of the Zero waste movement in July 2024, I expect everyone to take full responsibility to keep our environment clean and free from litter,” she said.
“A healthy and clean environment can prevent people from life-threatening communicable diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
“May all the responsible Government departments and parastatals, parliamentarians, traditional leaders, church leaders and community leaders upscale their efforts in educating, and inculcating good habits among the youth, congregants and the public at large with regards to clean environment.”
