BEER brewing company, Pungwe Breweries last Friday handed over an ambulance to the cash-strapped Mutare City Council which has been operating without a reliable emergency vehicle.

The handover ceremony took place at Civic Centre.

The donation came as relief to the council which has been operating with only one ambulance – a ramshackle that apparently spent more time in the garage than on the road.

Pungwe Breweries general manager, Ms Shupikai Chikuruwo, said after assessing the council’s plight, they felt the need to handover the ambulance to improve health delivery.

“The donation is part of our organisation’s corporate social responsibility programmes and we felt the ambulance will play a critical role in improving health delivery. We believe it will go a long way in reducing maternal mortality. We will continue to give back to the society whenever resources permit,” she said.

Acting Town Clerk, Engineer Donald Nyatoti, said the donation came at a time when the council had no reliable and efficient ambulance to ferry patients.

“The donation came at a critical time. The ambulance we had was not efficient. It could break down more often and we were in a quandary. The donation will help improve the health delivery system,” he said.
