Pupil crossing road dead on the spot: magistrate guilty of culpable homicide

A 46-YEAR-OLD magistrate has been convicted of culpable homicide after he ran over a pupil who was crossing a road in Masvingo.

Makunde Timeon Tavengwa appeared before a magistrate in Masvingo and was found guilty. Tavengwa was ordered to pay a fine of US$400 or face five months in prison.

The court heard that on 22 November 2023, Tavengwa was driving his Nissan X-trail vehicle along Harare-Masvingo road when he hit a school pupil who was crossing the road.

The child died on the spot from head injuries. The police conducted investigations and it was revealed that the accident occurred in broad daylight on a wide tarred road and was caused by negligence and speeding.
