AMIDST pomp and fanfare marking a significant milestone for Masuku Primary School and the Tshabalala community in Bulawayo where the Indian Embassy in Zimbabwe officially handed over a new school block, two pupils from the school took to the stage and recited powerful poems that left the audience spellbound.

Yomsa Ndebele, a Grade Seven pupil and Nobuhle Sibanda, a six-year-old Early Childhood Development (ECD) learner at the school, stole the show with their memorable performances. Yomsa’s and Nobuhle’s words left a lasting impression on the attendees early this week.

Nobuhle warmly welcomed guests with a poem that showed how grateful the school and students were for the donation.  Her words captured the hearts of the audience, highlighting the importance of education and the exciting opportunities the new classroom block will bring for the school’s pupils.

After reciting her poem, she captured the heart and soul of the Member of Parliament for Bulawayo South and Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Raj Modi who was also part of the guests. In recognition of her talent and the poem’s impact, he gave her US$100.

Yomsa also delivered a powerful performance that captivated the audience with a heartfelt message.  Her poem tackled the critical issue of drug abuse, poignantly relaying the struggles and challenges it poses for young people today.

The raw emotion and vivid imagery in her work resonated deeply with the audience, which was evidently moved by her performance. The new building handed over to the school included three classrooms specifically designed for children with disabilities.

These classrooms featured two doors, a standard door and a wider one to allow for wheelchair access. Additionally, a ramp provided easy entry and exit for those using wheelchairs.  The building also included separate accessible toilets for both girls and boys.

The donation, according to outgoing Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vijay Khanduja, was a testament to the strong relationship between the two countries and a demonstration of India’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s development.
