As he was mourning his late mother who put a hot meal on their table every night, a wild thought ran though his mind as he wondered how he was going to fit in the boots that his dearest provider had left behind for him. He was now the breadwinner.
This is a living tale of Bulawayo’s renowned fabric-smith who saw potential in himself to monetise his inborn gift and nearly 10 years since the passing of his mum, he has become one of the city’s top designers.
The catchphrase, “I am because we are” moved Kumirai to come up with the Pusha Ntwana fashion line. Pusha ntwana is slang phrase which means, grind hard young lad.
The Pusha Ntwana label founder said his clothing line is not just a fashion label but a story of an African child who has to father his fellow “siblings”.
“This logo first came up after I lost my mother and I had to take care of my young brother without any help of anyone, the logo also means never give up on your dreams, push forward,” he said.
In Pusha Ntwana’s studio, Afro-Euro centric fusion high fashion is the order of the day as he seeks to fuse the African attire style to the trending denim style.
Kumirai, who worked with White Cotton in the Smoke house fashion show last year will be one of the hosts of the Bulawayo Fashion Week expo to be held in April.
Also in attendance will be Ayama, an international brand by a local designer, Atipah, Empress Primy designs, Brydan Reality TV, Samantha Tshuma founder of open eye modelling agency and Me Zimbabwe brand ambassador Ben Chest.
In June, the ambitious tailor is set to host the Winter Fashion drive alongside Ayama, Sozinio and Empress Primmy brands.
Pusha Ntwana has engaged in giving back to the community of Bulawayo by giving to the less privileged.
“I have a vision that Pusha Ntwana will one day become organisation that takes care of orphans. I want to donate things like blankets, clothes and food to the orphans in the City of Kings and Queens,” he added.
