RISING tennis sensation Zamani Moyo’s exploits on the local circuit has excited a women’s community organisation Qoki ZiNdlovukazi, who have pooled funds for his journey to the United States.
Moyo (18) recently secured a scholarship to study at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois, United States, and the women’s group chipped in by donating US$300.
Groomed by the famous Emakhandeni Tennis Club, Moyo had a superb season on court by outshining some top players from the Southern African region.
Moyo will pursue a two-year associate degree in sciences in the United States, while simultaneously sharpening his tennis career.
He was assisted by United States tennis coach Eric Sturgis to obtain the scholarship worth US$11 500 a year after showing a lot of potential on the court.
Although Moyo has been granted a United States visa, his family is yet to raise the US$1 200 for his air ticket.
He is required to enroll at Lewis and Clark Community College on August 25.
His coach Witness Jiyane has pledged US$200 towards his air ticket.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Qoki ZiNdlovukazi for donating US$300 to Zamani Moyo. This is not the first time Qoki has donated to the club, as in 2019 they financed our trip to Harare. We thank them for their continued support because Zamani is where he is because of their generosity,” Emakhandeni Tennis Club said in a statement.
Moyo has collected an incredible 36 medals made up of 18 gold, 15 silver and three bronze, since he started participating in tennis tournaments in 2015.
His biggest achievement came in 2018 when he made the Zimbabwe Under-16 in a regional competition held in Botswana.
When he was in Form 3 at Northlea High School in 2019, Moyo was the highest ranked Under-18 male tennis player in Zimbabwe. — @innocentskizoe
