Four Epworth men who allegedly pounced on unsuspecting taxi drivers they had hired, robbing them of their vehicles, valuables and cash have appeared in court.
Tendai Serenga (30), Rashidy Musa (20), Muranganwa Musungo (26) and Tinashe Nyakamhanda (22) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo.
Mr Makomo remanded them in custody to November 12.
Appearing for the State, Mr Tungamirai Chakurira alleges that on September 22, the four connived with Michael Ziira who is also facing murder charges, to steal taxis.
It is alleged that the gang approached a taxi driver at Mutomba Night club in Glennorah C, Harare and hired him on the pretext that they were going to their respective homes.
They boarded the car, a blue Honda Fit registration number ACL1103. On their way, it is alleged one of the accused grabbed the taxi driver by the neck ordering him to leave the car. They stole his cell phone and US$5 and dumped him, the court heard.
Three days later the vehicle valued at US$4 600 was recovered in Epworth, but as a burnt wreck.
It is alleged on October 15 around 9.30pm at OK Mbuya Nehanda Street branch, the four in the company of Ziira approached Benevolence Chingunga indicating that they wanted to go to Marimba Park.
The court heard that while in Musasa Road, Mufakose, one of the accused grabbed Chindunga by the neck and ordered him to surrender the car, valuables and cash.
They allegedly tied him with shoe laces and dumped him near Mhishi Shops in Mufakose after stealing his cell phone and US$32. They drove away with the pink Honda Fit valued at 6 000. The vehicle was later recovered in Rusape. The court heard that three days later at 8.40pm at Corner Bank Street and Mbuya Nehanda, the gang approached Charles Smokey and hired him to Waterfalls.
