The black and white rugby army is on cloud nine!

Highlanders Rugby Club is flexing its growing muscle after three of its finest warriors were drafted into the Lady Sables, Zimbabwe’s senior women’s rugby team, for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup showdown in Côte d’Ivoire.

The trailblazing trio — Simphiwe Gumbo, Memory Moyo, and Mbalenhle Mzizi — have made Bosso Rugby history, as they fly the flag in one of the continent’s toughest rugby competitions. The tournament kicked off on Wednesday, and the Lady Sables are set to take on the hosts this Friday.

And back home, the celebrations are already underway!
“As a club we are so excited that we have received some recognition after a very long time,” said Highlanders Rugby Club chairperson, Thulani “Dubula” Tabulawa.

“We have always said that our players are good enough to make it into the national team . . . The fact that they were given a chance to show their skills and showcase themselves, three of our girls from Highlanders made it into the Lady Sables team and we are very proud of them.”

For years, Highlanders Rugby was seen as a “development club” — but this latest achievement proves that the Southern giants are ready to scrap it out with the best.

“It is going to inspire other players in the club that when given a chance, they can also prove that they are very good. As Highlanders, it’s also an advancement, because when most people look at Highlanders they say it’s a development club but we are moving away from that stage . . .” said Tabulawa.

“Regarding us as development is detrimental to one’s fate as these girls have shown that we are ready to stand up and match the rest of the players who come from the so-called big clubs.”
The club boss didn’t forget those who worked behind the scenes to turn this dream into a national reality.

“Credit goes to the coaching staff for preparing these players to qualify into the national team. Our technical team and committee who have also been supportive, trying to make it easy for these girls to fit in and be a part of the big occasion,” said Tabulawa.

As the Lady Sables prepare for their showdown in Abidjan, Highlanders Rugby will be watching with pride — their stars now shining on Africa’s biggest stage.
